ORPINGTON RUGBY FOOTBALL CLUB has traditionally raised funds to help worthy causes, and each year the amount raised is increasing. 2001 saw our nominated charity - ‘Farnborough Hospital Special Care Baby Unit’ receive total donations reach over £10,000.

The success of our fund raising has prompted the launch of a new scheme called ‘ Partners in Sport’. This will be a fund that is designed to encourage participation in sport and to provide the much-needed resources to help develop skills.

It is our goal to help the disadvantaged, youth and disabled sports within our community and invite qualifying parties to apply for a share of this fund, to provide much-needed facilities, kit & equipment etc.

London Borough of Bromley

This is a fantastic example of how sport can benefit the people of the Bromley Borough, bringing clubs and communities together. The development of local sports clubs to work closer with the community is a key element in Bromley's Sports Strategy - Building Partnerships Through Sport. It demonstrates how voluntary sector sport can be used to contribute to the quality of life of the local population. Not only at an individual level, through the building of social and team skills, but also in allowing new developments to flourish through financial opportunity offered by this funding scheme. We would like to wish Orpington Rugby Club every success in their new Sports Fund.”

Kent County Rugby Football Union
On behalf of the Kent County RFU Committee and as President of the County, I am extremely happy to offer Orpington RFC, our sincere congratulations on organising what will be their Real Ale Festival and the launch of the Orpington RFC Sports Initiative.

This Club is, I believe, the first in Kent to launch such a scheme, which will be used to encourage participation in all sport and provide a resource to advance and develop the skills of participants. They are to be commended on their intention to invite, disabled persons, along with other clubs and orgainisations to apply for funding which will be used to provide essential equipment, coaching and other needs with the aim of enhancing personal skills, improving local communities and confidence in those fortunate to benefit, regardless of their age, gender or ethnic background.

The more support that Orpington RFC receives from the generosity of sponsors (and it would be great to receive this), whether large from public-spirited companies or little from individuals, the more support they in turn will be able to give to others. Orpington RFC are a junior club but unlike many other sports clubs, who have much larger resources than themselves, they are outward looking and are setting an excellent example to other clubs through not only seeking the advancement of their own club and sport.

Congratulations to Orpington RFC for their intention to offer financial support to others with such generosity. The game of Rugby in general and the Kent RFU in particular applauds this venture and wish them every success in this initiative and we hope that they, as a club, achieve success both on and off the field.
David Briggs. President – Kent County RFU
